Summertime and the living is simple
It takes little more than a mud puddle or a cardboard box to amuse a child. Walk outside with a toddler and witness the fascination that stems from a chance encounter with a ladybug or an earthworm.
Time actually does stand still for kids when they become immersed in something of interest. Of course younger children have no concept of time and are unable to comprehend the hours, days or weeks until the family summer vacation or other future event like lunch.
You’ve likely got your summertime mapped out. It is necessary to book vacation, campsites, hotels, summer camp and daycare in advance. However, there are other summertime activities that require little preparation or planning and others that are spontaneous and no less memorable.
Planning for spontaneous summer fun doesn’t sound spontaneous but if you don’t schedule down time, the chances of going with the flow will be slim. Before summer slips away, take stock of the little things that speak to you of summer. Ask the kids for some ideas too and make a list.
Here are some of my favourite simple summer pleasures; laying on a grassy hill and watching the clouds; listening to songbirds; smelling fragrant flowers; eating ice cream; blowing bubbles; picking and eating fresh local fruits and vegetables; cycling; running through the sprinkler (yes, I still do this); picnicking; reading/snoozing in the shade.
If crafts are on your list, replenish supplies so that you’re prepared when the creative urge strikes. You’ll find an excellent resource for summer crafts and activities in the “On the Bookshelf” feature this month. ‘’101 Kids Activities That Are the Bestest, Funnest Ever!’’ is a veritable encyclopedia of fun, packed with great ideas. For just one of the 101 activities, go to cityparent.com and check out the zip line bird craft. Or you can simply give your child a cardboard box and see where it takes her or him.
