Let Them Eat Cake

Every new parent wants to celebrate their new baby in a big way and the announcement is just the beginning. Moments after you announce your pregnancy, the next question is, “Are you having a boy or a girl?” Step outside of the cake cutting and box of balloons to find a new way to reveal your baby’s gender with our 25 unique ideas.
Tell the siblings first:
Use a simple science experiment with pH. Buy a universal indicator to change colour of water from clear to blue or pink by either adding ammonia or vinegar.
Fill a black balloon with coloured confetti and place on a board with nails or pushpins behind balloon. Have the kids throw beanbags to pop the balloon and reveal the contents.
Fill a Piñata with coloured candy. Depending on the age of the kids, use a traditional stick to break or buy a pull string design to open the bottom.
Create your own white playdough and add a few drops of food colouring inside. When kids start to play with it, the gender will be revealed.
A dirty diaper reveal is great for boy moms. Fill a disposable diaper with melted coloured candy. Make it heavy enough and wrap it like it is a dirty diaper. Have the kids open it to reveal the colour of “poop”.
For the Sporty Couple:
Many Etsy retailers offer pink or blue powder filled balls. Have the dad-to-be hit, throw or kick the ball which will open on impact.
If you are looking for a mid-evil approach, consider confetti filled cannons to blast out the gender colour.
Make your own bowling pins with painted 2 liter bottles. Fill with coloured water and set up your alley on a white sheet. When the ball hits the pins the coloured water will soak the sheet.
Set up a bucket with coloured water and cast a white sponge fish inside. Give it a minute for the fish to bite and reveal the pink or blue fish.
Target practice anyone? Place mom and dad in white clothes and have them shoot water guns filled with food colouring at each other.
For the Foodies:
Look for confetti filled push pops online and give them to everyone for dessert
Did you know that blue chai tea changes to pink when you add lemon juice? It’s a great idea for the family that is finally having a girl after many boys.
Purchase gender reveal cups that changes colours when liquid is poured inside. Have dad fill mom’s cup while everyone watches.
Bake a cake with gender reveal cake pulls (available online) and tie to different colour ribbons. Be sure that all the ribbons offer the same gender charm.
Make your own gender reveal eggs by draining the egg and leaving the shell intact. Fill with glitter, tape the bottom and then smash on dad’s head for a surprising answer.
For a Vintage Brunch:
Fill mom and dad’s Champagne glasses and drop in a colour fizzer (available online) to reveal their baby’s gender.
Rent a bubble machine and add food colouring to the bubbles for a magical display of pink or blue.
Attack multi coloured scarves and stuff in a box. Let mom pull on the scarves (like a magician) and reveal the last solid coloured scarf.
For a subtle reveal, place solid vases on the table with white mums right before the food is served. Pour food colouring in water and as the meal is eaten, the flowers will change colours.
Another version of the subtle reveal is to light a gender reveal candle which is white on the outside and as it melts, it reveals the pink or blue wax inside.
Across the Miles:
Use Facetime or Skype to show mom and dad chew pink and blue bubble gum. As they blow a bubble, have one pop the wrong colour.
Send a package with two latex balloons – pink and blue. Put a small hole in the wrong colour so it can’t be blown up. Ask grandparents to try and blow up the one they think is right.
Send a pink and blue onesie with the iron-on image reading “See you soon” or “Better luck next time”.
Order a pizza for grandparents to be delivered while you are on the phone. Have the pizza reveal in pepperoni – boy or girl.
Send grandma and grandpa a package of multi-colour beads in a plastic bag. Mix in the same sized expanding water beads of the right colour gender. Add a tag that says “instant baby, just add water”. The water beads will grow larger and the plastic beads will remain small.
