On a Thursday afternoon in Oshawa, a group of Kingsway College students is practising lifts and tumbling passes in the gymnasium. They are members of Aerials, the school’s acrobatics troupe. By spring, they will have performed for audiences across the region and beyond.

This is not what you might see in most high schools. But then, Kingsway College has never been afraid to take a different approach to help students discover faith, purpose and service.

Founded in 1903, Kingsway College is a private Christian day and boarding high school on a 75-acre campus in Oshawa. The school is operated by the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Canada and welcomes students from a variety of backgrounds. Its mission is straightforward: to reflect Jesus Christ and prepare students for His service. That sense of mission shows up in the classroom, but it doesn’t stop there.

Kingsway follows the Ontario curriculum and offers roughly 70 courses for students in Grades 9 to 12, leading to the Ontario Secondary School Diploma. This year, Kingsway College is excited to offer five new Advanced Placement courses. Teachers work with students in a small-school environment, with academic support available when students need a little extra help.

Aerials is one of the touring groups at Kingsway College, alongside Concert Band, Symphonic Choir, Dramatics Club, and Strings Ensembles. Students can also take part in varsity sports and intramurals, student leadership, campus ministries, outdoor activities, and a range of clubs. The King Fitness Complex includes two full-sized basketball courts, a weight room, and squash and racquetball courts.

For boarding students, school doesn’t end when the bell rings. The residences, cafeteria, fitness facilities, clubs and evening activities create a campus community that carries on well beyond the classroom. Students come to Kingsway from Canada and around the world, bringing different cultures, experiences and perspectives with them.

Faith is part of daily life at Kingsway College. Bible studies, chapel, vespers, Week of Prayer and Power Weekend programs give students regular opportunities to explore their faith and ask questions. Kingsway also observes the Seventh-day Sabbath, with worship, music, fellowship and other activities from Friday sundown to Saturday sundown. For some students, it becomes one of the defining rhythms of their time at the school.

Then there is the motto: “Service Not Fame.” It is easy for a school motto to become something printed on a wall and forgotten. Whether it’s participation in outreach days, helping with community cleanups, food banks, local schools or other projects, service is built into student life at Kingsway College. Mission trips have taken Kingsway students across North and Central America and beyond, where they have participated in construction projects, Vacation Bible Schools, tutoring and other community initiatives.

The school also recognizes that high school is about more than grades and activities. Kingsway’s mental health and wellness programming provides emotional support and creates opportunities for students to develop socially and emotionally, while helping them build healthy relationships, discover their strengths, and think about their purpose.

That may be what makes Kingsway College difficult to encapsulate. It is a school, certainly. But it is also a community where students live, learn, worship, compete, perform, serve and grow together.

For families considering their options for Grades 9 to 12, Kingsway College offers a different kind of high school experience; one where academic preparation matters, but so do faith, relationships, character and service.
