And I thought graduation was hard…
I thought graduation was hard, but nothing prepared me for my son’s wedding. The day came in a flash of anticipation and passed in what felt like a hot minute.
After months of planning, it was suddenly over – the fading laughter, embraces, photographs, happy tears, and the now-empty dance floor. How could a day we had waited so long for disappear so quickly?
Perhaps we cry at life’s happiest moments because joy and sadness coexist. Watching my son begin this new chapter, I remembered the little boy he was, the young man he became, and all the memories between.
We spend years preparing our children to stand on their own. Change is inevitable but experiencing it is different from understanding it. A wedding celebrates a beginning but also marks a turning point for the family watching from the sidelines.
What surprised me most was realizing my two younger sons felt the same bittersweet emotions. I had been so absorbed in my own feelings that I hadn’t considered how deeply their brother’s wedding might affect them. They, too, recognized that life was changing, as they had always known it. We were celebrating together, each of us processing the moment in our own way.
Then came the mother-and-son dance. When I heard the song, he had chosen, “I’ll Stand by You”, I was overcome with emotion. He had somehow found the words that expressed exactly how I had always felt. Through every stage of his life, my love and support were never conditional. No truer words could have been spoken, and in that moment, the song said everything my heart held.
The greatest joy of the day was seeing the newlyweds together. Their smiles, the love between them, and their happiness as they begin their life together as Mr. and Mrs., made every tear worthwhile. In seeing them so genuinely happy, I understood that letting go doesn’t mean losing what matters, it means making room for a new kind of closeness.
I never expected a wedding to make me reflect so deeply on time, family, and the passage of life. Perhaps that is why we cry; we are celebrating what lies ahead while acknowledging that what came before will never be quite the same.
Sometimes the happiest moments remind us just how much life changes. Seeing our children so happy shows that letting go of a little piece of the past is worth it.
