Getting outside

Getting outside

It was a beautiful day today.  The sun was shining, the temperature was above freezing for the first time in who knows how long, and to make it perfect, it was the first day of March Break.  I took my kids swimming with their cousins in the morning, and then we went for a walk downtown in the afternoon.

On a day like today, when I was a child, I wouldn't have come inside all day long, or maybe just long enough to steal some lunch.  There would have been packs of kids everywhere, throwing snowballs, building forts, playing street hockey, and causing general mayhem.

But there were no kids outside today.  Except for my kids chucking snowballs on our front lawn, you would never have known that school wasn't still running.  Even at the pool, there wasn't a single school-aged child there besides the ones I brought.  What a waste of a beautiful spring day.

Now, I don't know where your kids were today, but don't feel badly if they were among those stuck inside somewhere.  All is not lost.  Tomorrow is another day, and there are four more days of March Break still to come.  You still have time to send them snowballing in the front yard, fort building in the park, or skating at the nearest rink.

In fact, you still have time to join them.  So get out there, have some fun.  Throw a snowball, start a road hockey game, or just go for a walk.  Your kids will feel better for it, I promise, and so will you.
