The New Year is about to begin.
New pencils, new backpack, new teacher, new Grade, new clothes – with so many new things no wonder September feels more like a new year than January.
Even if you don’t have school-aged children, you’re likely to be caught up in the newness, recalling your own Septembers when the endless summer concludes with a new outfit and a back-to-school routine.
We don’t want summer to end; yet the anticipation of the new school year makes the end of the holidays more bearable.
I’ve started something new with the September issue of City Parent as the new editor. It’s actually a familiar position for me, having held the post for 16 years up until three years ago. Not unlike going back to school, there is much that is familiar and plenty of fresh and wonderful things to experience.
My two sons, Ben and Sam, grew up as City Parent product testers and attractions explorers. And again, they are heading back to school – high school and college respectively.
Even though they are big boys now, they will still need to get into that back-to-school routine. That includes getting sufficient sleep without sleeping in until noon.
In this issue, sleep expert Alanna McGinn, who provides tips and consultations through her Good Night Sleep Site, has some ideas for parents who want well-rested kids going back to school. No matter what their age, kids need their sleep or they get cranky – mommies too.
Enjoy the New Year. It’s good to be back.
