Fitness in the name of charity
We all know the benefits not-for-profit organizations reap when community members participate in their local fundraising initiatives, but supporting community-based charitable causes can bring benefits to you and your family too. Charitable walks, runs and bike rides are easy, fun ways to get the whole family out and moving more. Whether you’re interested in supporting cancer, diabetes, heart disease, the arts or a local grassroots initiative, it’s time to “ParticipACTION” for a cause.
There are a large number and variety of charitable events taking place all year ‘round in communities throughout Ontario that require participants to be physically active, so it’s easy to choose one that suits you and your family’s lifestyle. If your family wants an ambitious goal, consider beginning the season with a 5 km run and working up to longer runs. However, for something a bit slower and appropriate for family members of all ages, a walkathon may be the perfect choice.
But, it’s not just about walks, runs or bike rides. There are many creative ways to get active for a cause. For example, host a garage sale where all proceeds go to a charitable cause – lugging merchandise from inside the house will surely get the whole family moving; help out at a local food bank or clothing drive; register for a charitable golf tournament and enlist yourself and/or your child to be caddy; organize a dance-a-thon at your child’s school; or help build a house with Habitat for Humanity.
Finding the time to participate in charitable events can be a challenge, but not impossible. To motivate the whole family, make sure you find an event that appeals to everyone. As the national voice for physical activity and sport participation in Canada, ParticipACTION encourages Canadian families to do simple, fun activities that keep them moving. And, if they can benefit a not-for-profit organization at the same time, all the better.
“Charitable events are a great way to get the whole family active,” says Kelly Murumets, President and CEO, ParticipACTION. “It makes you feel good – you’re supporting the community and teaching your children the importance of giving, all the while helping to get your family active. ”
For some excellent opportunities to “ParticipACTION” for a cause, be sure to check your local newspapers and community centres for charitable events happening in your area that you and your family can enjoy throughout the year. Many national organizations hold local events, so be sure to keep an eye out for them too. Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s TELUS Walk for Diabetes, Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, Heart & Stroke’s Big Bike Ride are just a few examples of popular family events taking place in communities across Canada.
