If you aren’t too familiar with Macaques, you might think the Toronto Zoo’s Green Macaque project refers to the colour of the animals. The lion-tailed macaques actually have a dark coat with a flowing blonde mane and beard. What’s green in their newly refurbished exhibit that’s now heated with earth’s geothermal energy instead of  huge electric radiant heaters. The same energy efficient system will cool the zoo home of these endangered primates native to India. The new carbon neutral exhibit is in line with the Zoo’s Green Plan’s objectives of not only implementing green energy but allowing visitors so see how it works. The lion-tailed macaque exhibit can be found immediately south of the Zoo’s Indo-Malaya Pavilion. For details visit www.torontozoo.com/conservation.
