Events at Harbourfront

Every three years, Harbourfront Centre and Woodland Cultural Centre co-host Planet IndigenUS, the world’s largest multi-disciplinary Indigenous arts festival featuring cultures from around the world.

This year Planet IndigenUS took place at the Woodland Cultural Centre from July 31 to August 3, and then at Harbourfront Centre from August 4 to 9. Events will also happening at many partner venues around the city. This festival is a great way to introduce kids to the First People of this land, as well as many other Indigenous cultures.

On August 8 and 9, come down to the HarbourKIDS Tent for an afternoon of rock painting. Kids can paint a message, image, or symbol of hope for future generations. Over at the Ontario Science Centre, kids can take part in First Contact, a weekend of learning about Indigenous populations and how they have lived on this land for thousands of years.

On Sunday, August 9, The Gardiner Museum will be hosting Family Days, where kids can learn about early cultures from central and South America, take part in a scavenger hunt, and work with a ceramic artist to sculpt an animal out of clay. If you’re up for a daytrip a little further afield, The McMichael Canadian Art Collection will be hosting Family Sunday where families can enjoy nature walks, a hoop dancing lesson with world champion dancer Lisa Odjig, and other hands-on art activities.
